Survey on Project Learning
Foreword: Project-based Learning (PBL) in LTFC
At this time of rapid global changes effected by the development of a global economy and the revolutions in information technology, our world has shifted away from an industrial model of society to a learning society. These changes require education to develop individuals with the skills to make sense of the knowledge they acquire through the cognitive processes, skills of problem-solving and collaborative work, personal values and habits of mind necessary to engage in lifelong learning. It is under such a pretext that our school is vigorously committed to be truly a learning organization.
While our students continue to acquire intellectual development through a comprehensive, challenging and demanding mix of academic, aesthetic and physical endeavours., our mission remains the all round development of the young person. The long-term target of our school curriculum is to groom INDEPENDENT LEARNERS AND EFFECTIVE THINKERS --- A 'PERFECT' GENERATION OF THE 21ST CENTURY. A step we have taken as from 2007 is the introduction of a new mould of learning, we call “Learning Across the Curriculum” (LAC). To start with, a new mode of learning by putting together project-based, research-based and inquiry-based learning approaches in students’ different key stages of learning is launched.
These new approaches set the direction for curriculum integration in our school. The key objective is the training of our students’ active thinking mind through the use of the knowledge they obtain from the wide reading and research they make across the curriculum. We are aware that the knowledge the students learn in class remains dead or is totally wiped out from their minds soon after the examinations unless it is being applied and used. It is not the content but the activity of constructing it that gets stored in memory. This is the rationale behind the project-based learning. As a saying goes, "Humans don’t get ideas; they make ideas."
After a trial period in 2007-2008, between September and December 2008, our students were taught some basic skills on thinking and information collection, skills for collaborative work in groups, data analysis, formulation of researchable questions and answers seeking.
From January to May 2009, they will learn to apply these skills through a research project of their own choice in groups of 4 to 6 under the guidance of a teacher adviser, as well as develop the 9 generic skills of learning in order to learn independently. We stress the need of collaborative group work, as meaning making is not just an individual operation. Each individual interacts with others to construct shared knowledge.
This new direction of learning in our school will enable our students who are keen and capable of doing well in their studies to become critically aware of the need to apply their knowledge in real life situation by going deep into some areas of their interest and make connections. We believe that effective thinkers and independent learners are the direct beneficiaries of life-wide reading and research. If our students never seek and find something out themselves, they may not learn anything at all.
It is hoped that with the experience we gain this year in LAC, our teachers of all subjects in all year levels will take steps to incorporate wider reading and will provide more choices for students in research topics, and LTFC will become a school that values enquiry and curiosity of learning, a school where general knowledge is alive, well and growing.
